Clinical Notes - Pablo Sandoval Fractures Hand
Saturday April 30th, 2011
The San Francisco Giants will be without the services of third baseman Pablo Sandoval indefinitely due to a fractured hamate bone in his right hand.

Sandoval, hitting .313/.374/.530 in 24 games, was enjoying a nice bounce-back season, leading the Giants in batting average and OPS.  He's tied with Pat Burrell for the team lead in home runs (5).

Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News reported that Kung-Fu Panda will likely have surgery on Tuesday of next week and is expected to miss between 4-6 weeks.  Outfielder Domonic Brown of the Philadelphia Phillies had a similar injury during the end of spring training this year and is currently rehabbing, hoping to return to the Phillies early in the month of May.

San Francisco will have Miguel Tejada slide from short to third base, with Mike Fontenot and Emmanuel Burriss seeing regular playing time at shortstop.  Utility man Mark DeRosa is the regular backup infielder for the Giants, but with DeRosa on the disabled list due to wrist tendinitis, the team recalled infielder Ryan Rohlinger from Triple-A Fresno.

In related third baseman news, Ryan Zimmerman of the Washington Nationals will require surgery for a torn abdominal muscle and is expected to miss six weeks.  Zimmerman, who is expected have surgery on Tuesday next week, has been on the disabled list since April 12th.  Washington will continue to use veterans Jerry Hairston and Alex Cora at third base.

Fantasy owners looking for a short-term solution at third base could take a look at Alberto Callaspo of the Los Angeles Angels, Wilson Betemit of the Kansas City Royals, and Jack Hannahan of the Cleveland Indians.

i know the Giants have said when Brandon Belt returns, he will be used as an outfielder...any chance they change their tune and bring Belt up to play 1B and slide Huff to 3B? Just speculating, of course...

The original thought among Giants' beat writers was that Belt would return. The Giants are just giving more time to Belt to develop at Triple-A. As far as Huff playing 3B; he hasn't played the position in three years and is a defensive liability at any position. Plus with DeRosa's health up in the air, the left side of the infield could be a revolving door and that's why I think Rohlinger was recalled.
