Clinical Notes: The Jacoby Ellsbury Injury
Saturday April 14th, 2012
The 2012 season has already had a handful of early injuries to notable major league players, and one more was added to that list this weekend, now that Boston Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury has landed on the 15-day disabled list.
Ellsbury, 28, was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a subluxed right shoulder. The injury occurred after Tampa Bay Rays infielder landed on Ellsbury at second base after Ellsbury tried to break-up a double play. Jacoby was immediately removed from the game and taken to the hospital for further results.
Depending on what you read, a subluxed injury is a partial dislocation of the shoulder. Because there is uncertainty with the injury, a lot of the Boston baseball media is speculating that Ellsbury could miss between three and six weeks. However, it appears that the Red Sox are starting small and announcing that he will at least miss 15 days. On another note, the injury happen to Ellsbury's non-throwing shoulder, so hopefully that will help Ellsbury return to the lineup quicker.
Last season, Ellsbury put together an MVP-caliber season, hitting .321/.376/.552 with a .928 OPS, 32 home runes, and 39 stolen bases. Needless to say, he was outstanding in 2011 and fantasy owners expected the same in 2012.
Obviously the number one thought that comes to mind regarding Ellsbury and the recent injury is the 2010 season. In 2010, Ellsbury injured his ribs in the sixth game of the season in a collision with third baseman Adrian Beltre. When it was all said and done, Ellsbury would appear in a total of 18 games and hit .192/.241/.244.
The Red Sox were already thin on the outfield depth chart thanks to Carl Crawford. For now, Boston has recalled Che-Hsuan Lin to replace Ellsbury on the 25-man roster. For the starting outfield, here's what an everyday lineup with Ellsbury out could look like moving forward. Cody Ross, Ryan Sweeney, and Darnell McDonald will see plenty of at-bats.
From a fantasy perspective, owners hope that Ellsbury will return from the injury will little complications. Here are some possible options that may be available in your league. Owned percentages are from Yahoo!. Also be sure to check out Dan Port's Under the Radar for more waiver-wire options.
